Shorten an affiliate link only when the affiliate program permits that use and you can preserve and verify its tracking path. If the platform gives you a native product tag or its own sharing link, start there. A shorter address can help you manage an external placement, but it cannot create an affiliate relationship or guarantee commission credit.
This distinction matters as shopping moves into AI-assisted discovery. A viewer may find a product through a conversation, a tagged video or a creator profile without ever opening the link in your bio. Before replacing a link, identify the route that actually earns credit.
What this September's shopping updates change
On September 23, 2026, YouTube announced new Ask YouTube shopping capabilities, including product-review discovery and follow-up questions on a video's watch page. On September 24, LTK announced a new Search tab combining interest-based discovery, AI-generated search overviews and conversational shopping grounded in creator recommendations.
LTK reported an 84% increase in product click-outs from search to retailers since its new search experience began rolling out earlier that month. That is the company's reported engagement measure. It is not an 84% increase in creator commissions, an independently audited result or a forecast for your account.
Axios covered the broader shift on September 25. Its reporting connects these developments to the infrastructure behind creator commerce. The practical implication for a creator is to review the shopping paths already in use, rather than assume every product discovery will pass through an external short link. Availability and eligibility still need to be checked in your own platform account.
Identify what you are about to replace
A product tag, an affiliate URL and a link to your own guide may all lead someone toward the same product. They serve different jobs.
Scroll the table horizontally to compare the three routes.
| What you have | Use it for | Before changing it |
|---|---|---|
| Native shopping tag | A platform's product selection and shopping experience inside your content. | Use the platform's tagging tools. A generic URL to the retailer is not a substitute for the tag. |
| Program-generated affiliate link | An eligible external placement that the program can attribute to your affiliate account. | Check permitted channels and redirect rules. Keep the original link intact; use the program's own short-link option when it meets the need. |
| Your own guide or landing page | A stable explanation, comparison or resource you maintain. | A managed short link may help with distribution and later updates. Affiliate links on the page still have their own rules and disclosures. |
For a concrete example, YouTube's affiliate program documentation describes creators tagging products and potentially earning commission when viewers click those tags and purchase on the retailer's site. Brands and retailers set commission rates and attribution windows. Pasting an ordinary retailer URL into a description does not reproduce that documented workflow.
The same content can legitimately offer more than one route: a native tag for an eligible product and an external link to your detailed review. Label each action clearly. Do not promise that purchases through both routes will appear in the same affiliate report.
Four checks before adding a redirect
- Read the rules for the exact program and placement. Check whether the account, website, social channel and proposed redirect are permitted. Look for rules about shortened links, hidden destinations, link modification and disclosure. Permission in one program says nothing about another. If the documentation is unclear, keep the supported sharing route while you get clarification from the program.
- Save the program-generated URL before editing anything. Keep its full path and parameters in your private link inventory. Do not copy only the final retailer address after the affiliate redirect has run; that can remove the program's entry point. Do not strip unfamiliar fields or replace an affiliate identifier with a UTM label.
- Keep the first version simple. Where an external redirect is permitted, point it at the intact program link. Avoid adding query forwarding, destination switching, an iframe wrapper or another redirect service unless the program supports the resulting route and you have checked it. Extra behavior makes it harder to tell which version a shopper used.
- Check the customer journey and the program's evidence separately. Open the published placement on the relevant phone or browser, confirm the intended product, seller and region, and check that the required disclosure remains visible. Then use the program's link checker or approved validation process, if available. A page loading successfully proves navigation; it does not prove an eligible sale or a future payout.
Use the program's authorized testing procedure. Do not place self-purchases or manufacture conversions just to make a commission appear. If you have only checked that the page opens, record exactly that and leave commission attribution unverified.
For links in YouTube descriptions and other surfaces, also check where YouTube supports clickable links. An unsupported placement cannot be repaired simply by shortening its URL.
Read the report for the route you used
A short-link report can tell you about requests recorded at that link. It has no visibility into a shopping tag that sends a viewer directly through the platform's own path. Adding the two click totals does not establish a count of unique shoppers, and dividing one route's sales by the other route's clicks produces a misleading rate.
YouTube's affiliate metrics guide distinguishes estimated revenue from earnings confirmed by the merchant. Returns, validation and reporting periods can affect what appears. Read the seller's terms and the relevant payout record before treating an estimate as money received; do not assume another program follows YouTube's timing.
Suppose a newsletter short link records 120 requests, while a video's native shopping report shows 8 orders. Those are invented numbers for two different paths. They do not establish an 8/120 conversion rate. You would first need evidence that the orders belong to that same set of visits, with compatible dates and definitions. Even an attributed commission does not by itself prove that the recommendation caused an additional purchase.
When counts disagree, identify the route, reporting window and metric before changing URLs. The guide to automated email clicks explains one reason a request count may exceed human visits. UTM parameters can help your destination analytics describe a campaign, but they do not enroll you in an affiliate program or establish commission eligibility.
Keep a small record for each placement
You do not need a large reporting system to avoid accidental substitutions. Keep the following record with the content you published:
Content and placement:
Route: native tag / program link / owned page
Program and permitted use checked on:
Original program link or product reference:
Published address, if applicable:
Expected product, seller and region:
Disclosure location:
Navigation check and date:
Affiliate validation: verified / not verified
Report to consult and metric definition:
Owner and next review date:When a product sells out or a partner changes, update it through the appropriate system. Re-tag the product in the platform when using native tags. Generate a replacement affiliate link through the program when needed. Review the surrounding copy and disclosure before changing a managed destination; an old recommendation should not silently become an unrelated offer.
302.sh can provide an editable address and a separate entry report for an external route you are permitted to manage. It does not replace YouTube or LTK's shopping systems, decide another program's commissions or reveal journeys that never use your link. For a guide you own, see the existing destination-update walkthrough. For third-party affiliate links, the program's supported workflow comes first.
The useful choice is the route that preserves the recommendation and its intended credit. Keep native tags native, keep program links intact, and use an additional short link when it solves a real distribution problem within those rules.
What is included in 302.sh?
Free allows 5 new links per UTC month and up to 50 owned links, with 5 custom slugs per month of at least 6 characters. Deleting a link does not refund its monthly creation allowance.
Free includes 2,000 analytics events per month and 90-day retention. Reaching that analytics allowance stops additional tracking, not redirects. Link deletion, owner-set limits and safety enforcement can still stop redirects. Branded domains require a paid plan and completed domain setup. See current plans and limits.
